A coffee colonic is much the same as a colonic with the addition of organic coffee to the wash at the end of treatment to increase the detoxifying actions of a colonic on the liver and digestive system.  This kind of therapy was made popular by Dr Gerson in the 1920's.

How and why does it work?

Due to the presence of palmitates, coffee possesses the ability to help remove free-radicals from the body, increasing the body's own ability to prevent and fight cancer and ageing.  The caffiene in coffee, once taken up by the liver, becomes a powerful detoxifying agent called glutathione-S-transferase.   This chemical will cause the liver to expel unwanted waste that it otherwise cannot efficiently eliminate from the body.  In addition, it stimulates contraction of the colon muscles to push waste out, increases blood flow to the digestive organs and promotes increased bile production causing toxins and blockages to be cleared out of the liver and gall bladder.  All of these actions promote the removal of waste from the colon and the liver, allowing the digestive and filtration systems to become more effective.

How many and how often should I have one?

Frequency depends on individual health and treatment goals.  An initial intensive program of 1-2 sessions per week can be very helpful in clearing health issues and boosting the system, however after that point sessions should be spaced as per when they are needed.  A general recommendation is for a maintenance schedule of 3-4 per year, though a more individual assessment will be made at the time of consultation.  How many one needs is really very dependant on the current state of one's health and digestive function.

Are there any cautions?

As the caffiene will increase circulation and possibly heart rate, those with vascular weaknesses or heart problems should consult with a physician.

Those suffering with gall bladder problems should also speak to their GP.  Increased bile flow may aggravate blocked ducts or cause stones to travel.
